Idylla, Teeth of Naros

Kollossae is a Non-playable race in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Description[]

The Kollossae are a race of giants who live in the Teeth of Naros.

Details[]

The Kollossae now live in the city of Idylla. Fleeing their ancient homeland of Jentilak sometime during the early days of the Age of Arcana after their priests had received a vision of the land from their goddess Ethene.

After discovering the promised land, the kollossae set to work building the city originally on the ground, mining stone from The Warrens quarry, to slowly build this city. It took years of research and dedication by the Kollossae as a whole to figure out how to create and successfully use magic that would allow the city to float.

But when they rose their city of Idylla, The Hyperian failed to raise up with them. When their Primos at the time, Arkes, attempted to forcefully raise the temple up, he and his followers were killed in the resulting failure, and their gods went silent. The Kollossae have since been trying to reestablish contact with their now silent gods for the past several years, with little to no success. The Kollossae call this incident the "Hyperian Tragedy".

History[]

The Kollossae originated from the land of giants known as Jentilak, known previously as the Mairu. Originally nothing more than a tribe of simple hill giants, when the Age of Arcana begun and magic was becoming more wide spread, the Mairu would change drastically. While other giant-kin were able to just harness their magical powers, the Mairu discovered they were conduits of great arcane powers, which they attributed to being favored by the goddess Ethene, this cause them to become extremely devoted to her and the Titans. Believing their worship of Ethene set them apart and above their giant-kin, they wrestled control of Ouranos from the Ettin, and with that the Mairu reinvented themselves as the Kollossae.

Kollossae culture rapidly evolved at a fast pace. Like the Alfar of old, they created their own magical organization known as the Oraculum to study and advance their knowledge of magic. Their studies into the arcane arts was extremely fast paced, eventually putting them on par and even rivaled the ancient magical association, the Order of Ash. The Oraculum mages became an integral part of Kollossae society, quickly becoming high ranking advisers to Kollossae leaders.

Much like their culture and arcane research, the Kollossae's appearance also changed quickly over time. Eventually their visage became more and more regal, and by the end of the Age of Arcana, their appearances looked more like Ethene herself.

To prove their prowess of the Ouranos, the Kollossae ordered the building of a capital city, to be called Ethenias after their goddess. Placed high atop the peaks of Jentilak so the Kollossae could be close to their gods as possible. The Ettin refused to assist in building the city as they were still angry over losing control of the Ouranos, as did the Deinir, a group of savage giants.

So the Kollossae and their Jottun allies worked together in building the city, completing the first fortifications of it in 1171 BE. The Kollossae built their homes at the highest peaks of the city, while the Jottun were relegated to the lower sections of it, and the rest of the Ouranos races were allowed to settle within the outermost walls of the city.

The Kollossae had great plans, and wished to open up trade with other kingdoms. This would require change to the Ouranos from a rag tag alliance into a proper kingdom, and declared an end to the long tradition of raiding and taking what they want from their neighbors.

This however angered the Deinir who saw diplomacy as a sign of weakness. They began to secretly plan the overthrow of the Kollossae and easily convinced their Ettin cousins, who wanted to take control of the Ouranos back from the Kollossae, to join them in their coup d'état. Seeing as an assault on Ethenias would require a much more massive force then what they currently have, the Deinir and Ettin reached out to various mountain troll clans with offering to split the spoils of the kollossae defeat, the trolls quickly agreed.

While in the middle of the harvest season in 1131 BE, the coup d'état against the Kollossae was launched. The Deinir and their allies quickly pushed back the Kollossae and their Jottun allies to the city of Ethenias. A group of Jottun, wishing to return back to their old ways, broke away and joined the Deinir's rebel army.

When winter hit, the mountains received heavy snow fall, temporarily halting fighting, but the siege of Ethenias began. When the winter season was close to ending, the Kollossae priests began doing rituals to make contact with Ethene in order to gain divine guidance in how to proceed in the war. Ethene appeared before them, and granted a vision to the head priest, who saw a distant land with mountains jutting up into the air like teeth.

When the snows thawed and open warfare began once again, the earth under the rebel forces charging Ethenias split open. The Kollossae priests saw this as a sign from Ethene; as the earth split, so too must the Kollossae and Jottun split from their giant-kin and depart the lands of Jentilak to the land in the high priest's vision.

Instead of continuing the war like the Deinir and their allies expected, the giant's and ogre's fled their city, to the harbor where the Ouranos kept their ships. Realizing not everyone would be able to escape in time before the rebel forces reached them, a force of volunteers were asked to be left behind, most of whom were Jottun, who hated the idea of running rather than finishing the fight. This volunteer force became immortalized by both sides, "the Stand of the Blessed" by the Kollossae and as "the Craven's Folly" by the rebel forces.

Nonetheless, the brave volunteer's managed to hold off long enough for the majority of the ships to launch. Those who were either unlucky enough not to get out to sea or who wished to remain were slaughtered by the enraged rebel forces. They then marched back to the city of Ethenias, sacking the city.

Meanwhile, the Kollossae priests lead the ships across the Baleful Sea, towards the heart of the Alfaria continent. They managed to make it over the mountains, and discovered the great Hyperian Temple. Within it, etchings of a great floating city could be seen. The Kollossae were determined to build this city, and quickly set about to lay the first stones.

Notes[]

When the Kollossae headed to the Teeth of Naros, they brought the Jottun along with them. The Kollossae and Jottun worked together for a time, but then separated later for unknown reasons.

It is possible that there are still some Kollossae settlements outside of the Teeth of Naros in Jentilak.

The Kollossae culture is based on ancient Greek culture. Their construction, literature, philosophy, names, belief system, and views of other non-Kollossae as being "barbaric" fits into how the ancient Greeks acted.

The Kollossae enjoy a good public debate, like the ancient Greeks, but have an interesting way of debating, and that is the two sides make an argument over an issue, and then they fight against each other in a battle until one yields or is defeated. The victor's argument is then taken to be as the "correct" view on the issue.

The Kollossae are very fond of their plays, much like ancient Greeks. Kollossae favorite genres are satires and tragedies, which is the same as ancient Greeks.

The name of the central part of the city, the Hyperian, comes from the name of the sun Titan Hyperion.

Despite the Kollossae's gigantic stature, all sagecraft altars, blacksmithing forges, and alchemy workbenches throughout the the Teeth of Naros area are identical in size to those in Human- and Alfar-majority areas.
