Jubal Caledus is the Archsage of the Scholia Arcana, he plays a major role in the faction main questline. The Fateless One first meets him while doing 'The Unquiet Bride'.
History[]
His magic powers are strong, and were awakened at a young age, as evidenced from the scroll found within his mind, the Dreamworld, entitled "The Wild Flame". As a young boy, he was scared by a wild dog and upon raising up his arms in fear, he conjured such a mighty flame that he burnt his family's woodshed down. Shortly after this incident occurred, he was "taken away", presumably by the Scholia Arcana.
He excelled in his schoolwork there in Rathir's academy, surpassing even his most formidable Alfar classmates, much to a particular Alfar professor's chagrin. For a human, he had an unusual amount of magical ability that took even Alfar years to simply be able to wield. He attracted the notice of the then-archsage Ephraim, who took him under his wing in a form of mentorship. It was apparent he was grooming him to become the next archsage, again, much to others' -- mostly students' -- distaste.
As Jubal grew at the academy, he found he had little interest in the textual studies, potion-making and other aspects of magic, and found himself attracted to battle magic most. This conflicted him, for he felt that if he was indeed to become the new archsage, he wouldn't be well-rounded enough or care and know enough about all forms of magic to take on such a role in the most important magical society of Amalur.
After only a few weeks of reaching the level of Savant within the Scholia Arcana, Jubal was summoned to Archsage Ephraim's quarters, where he found the man in the final throes of death. In his last breath, the true purpose of the Scholia Arcana was revealed to Jubal, and the mantle of Archsage, of which Jubal had always been wary, was finally passed on.
Present[]
The Fateless One first meets Jubal Caledus during the quest "The Unquiet Bride". After learning of some disturbing and mysterious disappearances in the town of Mel Aglir from Aethan Engar, the player is sent to meet with a contact who can fill in some more information: Jubal.
After a brief and unceremonious first meeting with the Archsage, Jubal elaborates and informs the player of a key suspect in the matter right before they are attacked. He seems to feel the presence of the attackers while the two converse.

Jubal Caledus can be found in Tala-Rane while doing The Unquiet Bride, in the Archsage Quarters during A Crowded Mind and at the Scholia Arcana Grounds during Revelation.
