Description[]

In origin, an ancient Irish Mythical monster, a possession spirit or vampire. Variations of the word include Dearg-Du, Dearg-Dul and Leansídhe. In Ireland many druids speak of Dearg-Duls which has to be killed by building a cairn of stones upon the grave. The Dearg-Duls can't shape change. Very little is known about the Dearg-Dul. According to the literary specialist in subjects of pre-modern Western "folk-metaphysics", Montague Summers, this Irish vampire can be held at bay by piling large amount of stones on its grave. Similar figures abound in world-mythology; e.g., the archaic Sumero-Mesopotamian "liliths", the various classic Greek Titaness witch-entities (Lamia, Empusae, etc.

In the internal universe of Amalur, more concretely and topically in aesthetic terms, they possess bat-like wings and hands, ending in claws; Leanshees or Leanashe have a vaguely humanoid torso, with their lower half splitting into tentacles. They range in color from beige and gray to purple and green. Along with poison and dark magic, Leanashe emit a terrible gurgling shriek while fighting.

As seen in the Midden, "psychologically", Leanashe are attracted to the atmosphere and ambience of decay and corruption. Leanashe grow more powerful as they age, and some ancient individuals are particularly dangerous.

BRIEF TACTICAL OVERVIEW:

Initially, the Leanshe will primarily attempt to savage the Fateless One with claw-swipe attacks and (if attentively observed) a very dodgeable projectile scream, until weakened past the majority percentage of its health, at which point the creature will utilize its most dangerous attack, the Leanshe "Charge", which possesses a "Life-steal" property potentially robbing the player of exactly half of its vital health, whilst vampirically regenerating the wraith's own life-force.

She is fast, agile and posseses strong melee and magic attacks; and can even cast "illusion spells" (although almost without exception, not during mid-battle). They typically, conventionally travel alone; but, based on player-based rank or level and demonstrated skill, can, if considerably more rarely, also be encountered in groups, or in allied formations.

Leanshe groups as compared to single enemies, can prove highly problematic for the unprepared player. A rudimentary familiarity with the Leanshe attack-routine is needful in this context; evasive motions timed carefully based on sensitive observation of the monsters' attacks, as opposed to mere shield-based parrying, even for Might-centric characters, is ideal.

Regardless of combat specialty and facing the foe alone or grouped, a familiarity with defensive evasive motions is extremely useful. Poison-resistance, in terms of armor configuration and otherwise, is an emphatic plus when challenged by this foe, singly or fighting crowds. Finesse-based battle skills and weaponry, with their native tendency to underline Piercing damage, are tactically efficacious. A Might-centric warrior can Harpoon the solitary Leanshe enemy and weaken it by entangling it an an indefinite loop combo chain of punishment. Melee or Might-centric fighters opposing grouped Leanshe are not as conveniently positioned tactically, and should conservatively engage, even to the point of passive attrition, especially paying attention to audio cues to circumvent potentially fatal attacks. "Duelist" or Finesse-based fighters are at an advantage, possessing the Longbow for ranged guerrilla skirmishing, also equipped with piercing-oriented Daggers or Faeblades in the event of close-quarters possibilities; the Finesse "superweapon" of the Shadow Flare, with its particular penetrative properties, if point-blank directly unleashed against a Leanshe, proves devastating. Sorcery-tending fighters should maintain distance, assume guarded orientation and remember evasive defense; when the situation allows, the Sorcery-oriented warrior or player ideally should summon Faer Gorta or by similar means or acts, create a diversionary opening for damage; while distracted, the Sorcery-inclined can then tag and detonate the individual or group with the Mark of Flame, following up with a strong Storm Bolt or Ice Barrage, at range if not solidly having the upper hand.
