Mercantile is a skill that allows you to master the art of selling for more and buying for less.
Each skill point improves buy and sell gold costs at merchants, while milestones increase the value you recover when destroying junk items, and ultimately allow you to sell stolen items to any merchant. Mercantile skill does not have any effect on quest rewards.

Notes[]
The formulas for determining buy/sell prices are:
Buying: ItemBaseValue x (BuyBaseFactor - MercantileBuyFactor x MercantileSkill)
Selling: ItemBaseValue x (SellBaseFactor + MercantileSellFactor x MercantileSkill)
where BuyBaseFactor = 25/8; MercantileBuyFactor = 1/8; SellBaseFactor = 13/60; and MercantileSellFactor = 1/30.
Although the milestones specify that destroying an item provides a percentage of the item's value, an item's value appears to be itself a function of the player's Mercantile skill level. This can be tested by comparing the results from destroying an item before and after using a Fateweaver.
