“Several members of a caravan have been attacked and killed by mysterious creatures. Caravan leader, Rota, has asked for my help. The bodies are still down by the site of the attack.”
Description[]
Of Life and Death is a side quest available in the Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning exclusive Fatesworn DLC.
Walkthrough[]
Search the Scene of the Murders[]
After receiving this quest from Rota Jansen, double-back eastward and then veer northwest down the winding path to the valley below and investigate the four murder scenes for clues.
Destroy the Strange Device[]
“A strange, mechanical device seems to be agitating the dead, attracting nearby Faer Gorta and Sons of Laz. I should destroy it immediately.”
Further down a fog-laden path on the valley floor you’ll discover Faer Gorta, Sons of Laz, and a Necro Crystal. As long as it remains active, this magical device will continuously revive any nearby undead creatures within moments of falling in combat. To prevent this you must destroy the Necro Crystal.
Return to Rota Jansen[]
“While searching the scene of the murders I discovered that something seems to have raised the dead… partially. The slain settlers turned into Faer Gorta and Sons of Laz. I must report the news to Rota back at camp.”
Now that the Necro Crystal and undead creatures have been dealt with search the victims’ corpses and collect the Cheap Ring, Broken Tool, Rusty Key, and Yellowed Letter and return them to Rota Jansen.
Look for Clues[]
“Rota doesn’t know anything. I must take matters into my own hands. Maybe the gnome called Effie can help me.”
Head south along The Westroad and speak to Pledgeshield Grunberg.
Search the Abandoned House[]
“Pledgeshield Grunberg has seen strange lights and heard disturbing noises from the abandoned house down the road.”
Enter the Roadside Shack and open the hidden passage (requires Detect Hidden skill level five) located behind the fireplace. Proceed down the steps into the basement where you will be confronted by Faer Gorta, Sons of Laz, and more Necro Crystals. Quickly defeat the Faer Gorta & Sons of Laz and destroy the Necro Crystals to ensure that the undead do not rise again, then proceed through the basement and into the adjoining cave. Along the way you’ll discover some research notes on a bookshelf, a secret laboratory similar to the one used by Fomorous Hughes, and a warded chest. Dispel the ward, open the chest, and retrieve the Waterfall Key.
Find the Necromancer[]
“Inside the basement of the abandoned [shack I] discovered a strange device, as well as a key that opened a door in the nearby waterfall. I am certain that the inventor of these strange necromancy devices inhabits this cave. I will find them.”
Proceed northeast from the Roadside Shack and use the Waterfall Key to unlock The Wallows, which can be found hidden behind the waterfall just east of the nearby Lorestone. Once inside you’ll encounter waves of Faer Gorta, Sons of Laz, and six Necro Crystals – three on the upper level & three on the lower level – that must be located and destroyed.
Defeat Effie Cruikshank[]
With the Necro Crystals destroyed you will be confronted by the Necromancer, Effie Cruikshank. After a brief exchange into the nature of her experiments with the Necro Crystals, Effie will launch her attack by summoning quartets of Faer Gorta and Sons of Laz as support while she aggressively pummels you with wave after wave of magical fireball and wind attacks. With the Necro Crystals destroyed she cannot revive her undead servants, so quickly dispatch these and then shift your attention to Effie. The side quest is complete once Effie Cruikshank has been slain.
