The Fateless One meets Rota Jansen on The Westroad near the collapsed bridge while searching for Agarth in Mithros. Rota is an Almain female in charge of a settler caravan traveling towards Mithros in hope of finding a fresh start at a new life for themselves away from the tumult of the Faelands. She asks the Fateless One to investigate the murder of four members of her caravan. When asked by about the murders, Rota reveals that they took place by the river in the nearby canyon and were committed by creatures that were unlike anything she had ever seen before.

During the course of the investigation the Fateless One discovers Faer Gorta and Sons of Laz being drawn to a strange device that continuously revives the undead creatures as they fall in combat. When asked about the device, Rota suggests that Effie Cruikshank, a Gnome scholar and former artificer for the Scholars of Adessa may be able to provide more information.
