Sceptre Blast

Sceptre is a type of magic weapon available to the Fateless One in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Using rapid focused attacks, the sceptre is a long-range weapon, good at defeating enemies from afar and applying elemental status effects. Being part of the Sorcery-based weapon set, they are intended for use by mage-style characters, and are bolstered by the Arcane Weaponry and Sceptre Mastery passives in the Sorcery ability tree.

Mana Usage[]

Sceptres are unique in that they are the only weapon type to use Mana in order to attack. However, the amount used is a percentage of the Fateless One's total Mana reserves, meaning that a Sorcery-focused character (with no points in the Arcane Weaponry series of abilities) will get exactly the same amount of shots from a sceptre as a Might-focused one, even though they have vastly different Mana reserves.

The Arcane Weaponry series of abilities can reduce the percentage of mana needed for each shot. Without any of these abilities unlocked, a sceptre shot will cost 6% of the Fateless One's total Mana. Each one of the Arcane Weaponry abilities unlocked will reduce this percentage by 1%, meaning a character fully invested in this entire series of abilities can reduce their sceptre Mana costs down to 2%.

With this being the case, a character with high enough Mana Regeneration can fire a sceptre indefinitely if they choose to, as the cost of firing the sceptre will be less than the amount of Mana gained back between shots.

Note: It is not yet confirmed whether or not items with the "Reduced Mana Costs" enchantment affect sceptre costs. This will need to be confirmed in-game.

Damage Characteristics[]

Sceptres will always have a base damage consisting solely of elemental damage and each element's damage-over-time (DoT) component.

They have an Average attack speed, being slower than the other ranged weapon, the Longbow, but are not restricted by any sort of quiver, instead basing the number of attacks possible on the amount of Mana available to the Fateless One.

They have the Fewest combat moves available for those who invest in the Arcane Weaponry series of abilities, less than any other weapon type in the game.

They have the Lowest damage output per hit of any weapon in the game, being weaker than even Daggers in their initial damage. However, this is bolstered by the damage-over-time elemental component, which can make sceptres a much more formidable weapon, on par with faeblades and longbows. Edit: As the DOT can't stack and can't crit, it's wildly exagerated and misleading.

Weapon analysis: The sceptre is purely an utility weapon. It's pretty bad at basically everything (damage, coverage, etc), except for one thing it's incredible for: It is able to put the status effect on the first basic attack hit. Meaning you can apply, for instance, bleed and frost (assuming you have the correct sceptre to do so) almost instantly on anyone, without having to do a full combo or a charging attack. It's not insane, but it's great if you want to use a single weapon specifically.

Sceptre Abilities[]

The Fateless One can learn new attack techniques with the sceptre by investing in the Arcane Weaponry series of abilities, and can increase damage delivered by the use of staves by investing in the Sceptre Mastery ability.

  • Charged Shot: Hold and release for a powerful blast that deals more damage and applies any status effects.
  • Warding Blast: Attack while blocking to fire a blast along the ground into your foe, launching them into the air. Charging this attack before releasing it will fire a total of 3 projectiles in a fan in front of the Fateless One.

Crafting Sceptres[]

Main article: Blacksmithing

The Fateless One can craft sceptres at any Blacksmithing Forge by using an elemental dowel and a handle; bindings and grips are optional components. With sufficient skill, mastercrafted sceptres that offer a bonus percentage to total damage can be created.

The Fateless One can also disassemble existing sceptres for salvage, recovering some of the above-mentioned components.

Notes and Advice[]

  • Sceptres are a good secondary weapon for a Sorcery-focused character, as they offer range as well as space-making moves, which are both important to those specializing in the arcane arts. However, one must balance Mana usage between the sceptre and the active spells used, as they both will drain the Fateless One's Mana reserves. If not monitored properly, one could find oneself in quite a bind without enough Mana required to defeat the enemies left over!
