A Shard is a sagecrafting material used to confer different effects into a crafted gem.
Each shard has an effect (fire, ice, lightning, magic, physical, poison, and protection) and a clarity (cloudy, lambent, and pristine) that determines the properties of the resulting gem.
The clarity of cloudy and lambent shards can be strengthened at a Sagecraft Altar by combining two shards of the same effect and clarity to produce one shard of the next highest clarity, lambent and pristine, respectively.

Clarity outcomes[]
Clarity of shards | Cloudy | Lambent | Pristine |
---|---|---|---|
Cloudy | Cloudy | Cloudy | Lambent |
Lambent | Cloudy | Lambent | Lambent |
Pristine | Lambent | Lambent | Pristine |
Generally, combining shards of different clarities but the same effect will result in a gem with an average of the two shard's clarities, rounded down, i.e. combining a cloudy shard with a lambent shard will result in the same gem as combining two cloudy shards, combining a lambent shard with a pristine shard will result in the same gem as combining two lambent shards, and combining a cloudy shard with a pristine shard will result in the same gem as combining two lambent shards.
However, combining shards of different clarities and energies can produce gems of higher than expected clarities.
- Example 1
- Same effect, different clarity
The Gem of the Vanquisher can be produced with 2 Cloudy Physical Shards or 1 Cloudy Physical Shard and 1 Lambent Physical Shard, while the Gem of the Conqueror can be produced with 2 Lambent Physical Shards, 1 Cloudy Physical Shard and 1 Pristine Physical Shard, or 1 Lambent Physical Shard and 1 Pristine Physical Shard, and the Gem of the Subjugator can only be produced with 2 Pristine Physical Shards.
This example follows the rule that a gem's clarity is an average of the two shard's qualities, rounded down.
- Example 2
- Different effect, same clarity
The Gem of Snow can be produced with 2 Lambent Ice Shards but it can also be made with 1 Cloudy Ice Shard and 1 Cloudy Magic Shard (not the Gem of Ice, as expected). In this case a lambent clarity gem is created with 2 cloudy clarity shards.
The Gem of Frost can be produced by 1 Lambent Ice Shard and 1 Lambent Magic Shard but it is of a higher clarity than the Gem of Snow, but less than the Gem of Winter which is produced with pristine shards only.
This example does not follow the rule that a gem's clarity is an average of the two shard's clarities, rounded down. It shows that one shard in a combination (in this case the magic shard) is more powerful.
